The options
Not sure which option suits the design? Send us your drawings or specifications and we’ll help determine the right fabrication approach, the details required and what it will cost.
| Section J | Acoustic | Lead-lined | Curved and specialised | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| What it addresses | Heat gain and loss through the glazing, measured as U-value and SHGC | Sound transmission, measured as Rw or Rw+Ctr | Radiation shielding for imaging rooms, measured in lead equivalence | Architectural form, feature glazing, one-off shapes |
| Typical makeup | Low-E coated glass, tinted or clear, single or double glazed, often in thermally broken frames | Laminated glass with an acoustic interlayer, or double glazed units with unequal thicknesses and a wide cavity | Lead glass or lead-laminated glass in a lead-lined frame, with sealed joints | Toughened or laminated glass bent to radius, specialist processing |
| Where required | Any commercial or multi-residential building with a Section J or NatHERS report | Schools, apartments near roads and rail, hotels, offices with a noise criterion | Hospitals, dental and veterinary practices, medical imaging suites | Hospitality, lobbies, feature stairs and screens |
| What we need from you | The Section J or energy report and the window schedule | The acoustic report and the room-by-room criteria | The radiation shielding report from the physicist | The architectural drawings and the setout |
In delivery
Glazing installed airside in a working terminal, which means security clearance for every installer, night works, escorted access and no room for a panel arriving wrong. Every unit is fabricated to the approved shop drawings and delivered in sequence, because there is nowhere to store a mistake airside.
Scope
Airside glazing under live airport operations.
Specs
13 tonnes 21.52mm thick glass supplied and installed
Status
Completed September 26
Brisbane Domestic Terminal.
The perks
Glass, frame and certification as one assembly, because that is how it performs.
01
Makeups selected to hit the U-value, SHGC or Rw in the report, with the manufacturer’s data attached to the submission.
02
Thermally broken or acoustic-sealed framing where the assembly needs it, so the frame does not undo the glass.
03
This service is for schools, apartments and hotels near noise sources.
04
For imaging rooms, to the physicist’s lead equivalence, with sealed and overlapped joints.
05
Bent, patterned and feature glazing, coordinated with the architect’s setout.
06
Form 15 and Form 16 documentation, AS 2047 test reports and glass compliance in the handover folder.

Why Surefit for performance glazing
Performance glazing fails when the glass is chosen late and the frame is chosen separately. We read the reports at pricing and treat glass and frame as one assembly.
We read the energy and acoustic reports at pricing, not at certification. The glass and the frame are chosen together to hit the figure.
Test reports, manufacturer data and glazing certificates are assembled as the job runs, so practical completion is not held up waiting for a form.
Twelve Queensland schools, a childcare centre and airside work at Brisbane Domestic Terminal. Environments where the compliance is not optional.
The assembly performs as a unit, so it is priced and delivered as one.
Five scopes, one factory, one crew.
01
Multi-residential and commercial facades, supply and install. In delivery now at The Lanes, West End, across 11 storeys.
02
Shopfront suites, aluminium doors, frameless and automatic entries, gas strut windows. Delivered for Integral Constructions at 4 Pines, DFO Brisbane.
03
Glazed partitions, mirrors and the full glazing scope of a commercial fitout under one contract.
04
Framing and glazing structures made in our own 600m² facility. New-build residential windows and doors for builders sit here.
05
Thermally broken framing, acoustic and Section J compliant glazing, specified into the package before a frame is cut.
Questions builders ask us
Section J is the energy efficiency part of the National Construction Code for commercial buildings. A Section J report, prepared by an energy consultant or ESD engineer, sets the thermal performance the building fabric has to meet, including U-values and solar heat gain coefficients for the glazing. We work from that report to select the glass and frame that meet it.
Glass with a thin metallic coating that reflects heat while letting light through. In Queensland it is mainly used to reduce solar heat gain and air conditioning load, which is why Section J reports so often call for it. It is available clear or tinted, single or double glazed.
Yes. Lead glass or lead-laminated glass is supplied to the lead equivalence in the physicist’s shielding report, set in lead-lined frames with overlapped joints so there is no gap in the shielding. Common in hospitals, dental and veterinary practices and imaging suites.
It depends on the site and the room. Classrooms near roads, rail or flight paths typically need glazing rated Rw 35 to 42 to meet the acoustic consultant’s internal noise criteria. The acoustic report sets the figure; we select a laminated or double glazed makeup and a frame with the seals to match it.
In Queensland, glazing compliance is documented on QBCC Form 15 (design or specification) and Form 16 (inspection of the installed work), signed by a competent person the building certifier accepts. As the installing contractor we prepare and sign the Form 16 for our work, supported by the glass manufacturer’s certificates and the system’s AS 2047 test reports, and hand it over at completion.
Yes. Brisbane Domestic Terminal is airside glazing under live operations: security-cleared installers, night works and escorted access. Schools are delivered during term with students on site. We plan the install around the environment rather than expecting the environment to stop.
